Sewing Program

In 2016, a sewing cooperative was started in the village of San Luis through the vision and dedication of Cindy Otten and Mary Shean. From the beginning, the women involved showed determination and creativity, even though conditions were extremely challenging. With no dedicated workspace, they were forced to sew outdoors, often working under the open sky. Many days their labor was interrupted by sudden rain, soaking their materials and making progress difficult.

Recognizing both the commitment of the women and the need for proper facilities, COMMIT was asked to help. In response, COMMIT built a sewing center for the cooperative in 2022 . This new space transformed the women’s work. Protected from the weather and equipped with a stable place to gather, the sewers were finally able to focus fully on their craft. Today, the women use the sewing center enthusiastically many times each week, and it has become a hub of productivity and pride in the village.

A similar sewing cooperative was started a few years later in the village of Casa de Piedra by Kim Neeb. While promising, this group has required more ongoing guidance and support. In contrast, the San Luis cooperative has grown into a largely independent group, known for the talent, confidence, and self-sufficiency of its members.

When Cindy Otten returned to San Luis in 2024, she was thrilled to see how successful the cooperative had become. What began as a small, weather-worn effort had grown into a thriving enterprise, sustained by skilled women who had truly made it their own.
