Eco-Friendly Stove Project 

COMMIT is collaborating with Stove Team International to build up to 750 eco-friendly stoves over the next three years. These stoves, known as Justa stoves, are highly efficient, reducing carbon emissions and greenhouse gases by at least 50%. Most importantly, they significantly improve the health of users—particularly women and young children—who are often exposed to harmful smoke from traditional open-fire cooking.

Justa stoves use innovative rocket-elbow technology, are well insulated, and include a smokestack that vents outdoors, ensuring much cleaner indoor air quality. By replacing open-fire cooking methods, these stoves not only lead to better health outcomes but also support environmental sustainability.

COMMIT is proud to support this transformative initiative, which is improving lives and reducing environmental impact in the communities we serve. To date, more than 300 stoves have already been built.


STOVE BUILDING IN ACTION

Stove building is a multi-step process that requires many hours of hands-on work, as well as waiting periods while the mortar dries.


  1. Sift sand to remove stones and debris.

  2. Mix mortar by combining three buckets of sifted sand with ¾ of a bag of cement. When ready to begin laying stones for the base, add water and mix vigorously.

  3. Create a flat platform for the stove base. This may involve digging a rectangular area into the existing hard-packed mud floor.

  4. Build the stove base, which typically takes about two hours. Allow the mortar to dry for 24 hours.

  5. Pour the top of the stove base to create a completely flat surface on which the stove will be built. Allow the mortar to dry for three days.

  6. Prepare additional mortar by repeating Step 2.

  7. Build the stove, a process that takes approximately four hours. Allow the finished stove to dry for eight days.
