Expanding Access to Clean Water
Over the past few years, COMMIT has drilled five new wells and installed three distribution systems connected to existing wells, ensuring that clean, safe water is accessible to more communities. Trenches for these systems were dug by the men and women of the villages themselves, demonstrating extraordinary commitment, cooperation, and community ownership.
This initiative has replaced unsafe water sources—such as shallow wells and rivers—with reliable systems that provide clean, potable drinking water. Electric pumps were installed in all wells except for the well in La Flor, which does not have electricity and therefore relies on a hand pump. To further enhance access and reliability, five water towers were constructed to store and distribute water efficiently throughout the villages.
Each participating village received essential training in health practices, responsible water usage, water testing, and sterilization. To ensure long-term sustainability, CAPS committees (community water committees) were established in every village. These committees are responsible for managing well operations, monitoring water usage, and collecting funds to cover ongoing maintenance, repairs, and electricity costs.
This project has transformed the lives of more than 1,000 families by providing a fundamental human right: access to clean, safe water.
